The piece that actually pulls the screw head is cut in a "V" shape, so smaller screws work, it's just a little easier to lose your grip on them if you're not careful. You have to be sure the shaft of the screw is all the way down into the V.
In the case that the anchor does not tighten up behind the wall, please screw the screw clockwise to let it go closer to the anchor, then squeeze the handles until the anchor is secure.
